A Message from G-CAN Directors
August 2025
As we end the second quarter of our second decade, the directors of G-CAN are pleased to share some exciting news and updates with you.
Planning is well underway for the G-CAN Annual Research Symposium and Workshops, scheduled for October 22-23, 2025, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. For more information on our agenda and to register, please refer to the article below. The event will once again offer both in-person and virtual attendance options, providing flexibility for attendees’ travel plans.
In other developments, our societal journal, Gout, Urate and Crystal-Deposition Diseases (GUCDD), now in its second year, has been assigned its first CiteScore. The number of submissions of high-quality articles and reviews from members and other experts in the field have grown steadily since its launch in 2023 and GUCDD is increasingly recognized as a respected publication in the domain of gout and related diseases. You can read more about that below. Please make sure to check out our current issue, Volume 3 Issue 2, as well as all past issues of the journal here.
Our early career program continues to expand, furthering our mission to encourage and support researchers entering the field. At this year’s Symposium, we will highlight the top abstract submissions from Early Career Investigators and present the H. Ralph Schumacher Award as well as the second annual SOBI Jr. Faculty Research Grant.
As G-CAN marks its 11th year, we remain committed to growing our membership and enhancing our support for emerging researchers. We invite you to join us either online or in Chicago this fall.
Sincerely,
Robert Terkeltaub, MD, President
Hyon Choi, MD, DrPH, Vice President and Treasurer

G-CAN 2025 Eleventh Annual Research Symposium and Workshops
OCTOBER 22-23, 2025
Intercontinental Hotel Magnificent Mile
505 N. Michigan Avenue
Chicago Illinois, USA
This eagerly anticipated event will showcase the latest advancements and breakthroughs in the field, while providing exceptional opportunities for networking and mentorship among experts, seasoned professionals, and emerging investigators. By registering, you’ll be able to gain not only fresh insights and practical strategies to enhance patient outcomes, but also join a vibrant community driving innovation in the study and care of gout and related diseases.
Whether you will be traveling to Chicago, or joining us virtually, our hybrid platform provides opportunities to connect with experts, colleagues, and emerging voices from around the world.
In-person sessions will be at the Intercontinental Hotel Magnificent Mile, located near the city’s numerous attractions and McCormick Place. However, those who are unable to travel have the option of attending virtually as in the past four years; presentations will be live-streamed, and speakers will be able to answer questions and participate in breakout sessions either in person or via the internet.
General Sessions will take place on Wednesday, October 22, and Thursday, October 23. These sessions will include Year in Review presentations, lightning talks, special lectures, and award presentations, as well as a combined Plenary Gout and CPPD Workshop/Networking session October 22. An evening reception is scheduled for October 22 following the day’s meetings. A draft agenda outlining the symposium topics and speakers is available here.
This year, to defray the rising costs of the meeting, we will be asking for a modest, tax-deductible donation to attend. Simply click the link below to register, and receive session log-in information and access to the symposium website, streamed presentations and information for in-person attendees.
A block of rooms for in-person attendees is available at a reduced rate at the Intercontinental Magnificent Mile. You will be directed to request your hotel room when you register for the symposium on the G-CAN meeting website.
Please share this registration link with your colleagues. For more information on the symposium or the meeting venue, contact Rebecca Hill, Executive Director, Rebecca@g-can.org.
MDPI Announces GUCDD’s First CiteScore
G-CAN and the publishers of our online journal, MDPI, are pleased to share that Gout, Urate, and Crystal Deposition Disease, the official journal of G-CAN, has been assigned its first CiteScore of 1.4 in June 2025, following its inclusion in Scopus (Elsevier) in 2025. The CiteScore ranks the journal 256 out of 433 titles (Q3) in the Medicine (miscellaneous) category, an impressive achievement for a journal just entering its third year. You can find more statistics on the MDPI website.
The current CiteScores measure the average number of citations within a journal over a four-year window (2021–2024). The Scopus database provides a comprehensive suite of metrics that support informed publishing strategies and research evaluation, and enable benchmarking of journal performance.
This achievement reflects the collective efforts of our authors, reviewers, and editors. Together we will continue to track the progress of GUCDD and its growing impact in gout, urate, and crystal deposition disease.
